Technology is always changing and as a parent I like my sons to be involved in it. My 10-year-old loves all things computer related and has been learning Java programming in the last year. He is teaching himself how to program and really enjoys the challenge of learning new things. There are two new books out from No Starch Press that teach kids programming and we received a copy of each for my son to read and experiment with.
Python For Kids – A Playful Introduction to Programming
This book is a guide to learning the Python programming language. If your child has ever wanted to write their own program, this is a great, easy-to-follow book that will walk you through the steps of learning to write code. Through the book they’ll get the chance to write two games and learn even more about animation techniques among other things. Python for Kids is a sturdy, paperback book with more than illustrated pages. It’s a good book to introduce your kids to programming and foster their creativity.
My son jumped into the book and started reading through it immediately. He has gotten about half-way through and has already learned several new things. Since he wasn’t a complete beginner he thought the book was super easy to follow along with but still found it enjoyable to learn. My son recommends this book to other brainiacs like himself!
Super Scratch Programming Adventure!
This is a book about a programming language called Scratch. It was developed for young people aged 8+ to help develop creative skills for the 21st century. Scratch is a graphical programming language that is free to download. Kids simply drag and drop colored blocks and create interactive stories, games, animations, music, art and more! It was funded by the National Science Foundation and developed by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. This book is laid out in a comic book format which is perfect for young minds to relate to and understand.
Super Scratch Programming Adventure arrived and my 8-year-old was drawn to the colorful softcover book. He’s still struggling with reading but with my older son’s help, both boys were able to enjoy the book. They haven’t gotten very far into it yet, but so far they like what they’re learning.
Python for Kids and Super Scratch Programming Adventure are both available on Amazon and at other book sellers. Python for Kids is at Amazon for $18.46 and Super Scratch Programming Adventure on Amazon is $14.01. It is also the #2 bestseller in graphic programming so it’s a popular choice.
If you have a child that has an interest in computers or programming, we would recommend either of these books.
Disclosure: We received the two books to facilitate this post. Opinions are our own.
