Tips For a Stress-Free Family Trip

Now that we’re into the busy holiday season, many families will be traveling to visit family and friends. While seeing your loved ones is wonderful, the stress from travel can sometimes be overwhelming. From several years of regular travel I have learned several ways to decrease the stress and make traveling with family more enjoyable.

car travelThe first thing I do when I know we are going to be traveling is to make a plan. I am a list lover so I make a pre-travel to do list with everything I need to do prior to the trip. I also make a list of things that I need to pack so that I won’t forget anything. One thing I include on my list is an extra set of clothing and shoes for everyone. You never know what might happen that you’ll need these things. I also always keep baby wipes on hand. Even though my boys have been out of diapers for years, baby wipes still come in handy for messes in the car, on their hands and face, etc.

We currently do all of our traveling by car, so another important thing we do is to check all the fluids and the tires prior to the trip. I recommend doing this a few days before you leave because if something needs done it’s much easier to take care of it when you’re not in a rush. When traveling by car I also recommend keeping at least one warm blanket in the trunk and also a tool kit just in case of an emergency. A flashlight is also a good thing to have in case something happens at night.

No matter what kind of trip you are taking, you should always keep important documents on your person. I always make sure to have my ID, our insurance cards, a current list of medications each of us is taking, and photos of the kids with me. I keep the kid’s photos in case of a situation where they get separated from us and we need assistance in finding them. If you have a cell phone you could also take pictures of your kids prior to the trip just to be sure you have a current photo with you.

If you are taking a trip to another country, it might be wise to invest in travel health insurance. Many insurance companies in the United States will not cover you for accidents or illness when you are in another country. Healthcare in foreign countries can get very expensive, so getting travel health insurance coverage is a good investment to protect yourself while you’re abroad. We are planning on taking a trip to Italy in 2013, so we will be looking into travel health insurance for that trip.

Those are a few of the ways we help keep our family trips stress-free. I’m sure there are other things that I’ve left out and every family has different situations. What are some things that you do to help reduce the stress when you’re traveling?

Traveling may seems not so relaxing and relieve stress, specially when you have your kids with you. But if it’s only good for short distances then it might be good, anyways it totally depends on how you get yourself well and relieved from stress.
