My Saucy Immersion with Ragu!

For the past several months I have been working with the Ragu brand as a Mom’s the Word on Dinner Ambassador. As an ambassador I have been enjoying creating new recipes using Ragu sauces and also participating in online discussion about family dinnertime. One weekend in mid-September myself and all of the other Mom’s the Word on Dinner Ambassadors were invited to New York City to the headquarters of Unilever, the company who makes Ragu sauces.

I spent several hours connecting with the people behind the scenes of the Ragu brand and learning what really goes into making the #1 selling pasta sauce. Ragu pasta sauce is made from fresh ingredients; the tomatoes are grown for Ragu by independent farmers in California. Each year from July through October 1.4 million pounds of tomatoes are harvested for use in Ragu pasta sauce. From the time the tomatoes are picked until they are cooked is only eight hours – talk about fresh!

Children tend to be finicky eaters and less than 10% of them are eating the recommended daily amount of vegetables (CDC 2009). Ragu is committed to helping parents serve healthy meals to their families and that is why many varieties of Ragu pasta sauce contain 2 servings of veggies in every half-cup. Ragu is also lowering the sodium in their sauces in an effort to make them even healthier for you and your family.

877 meals were prepared and consumed at home per person in 2010 with 243 of those being dinner meals. Of all those times, people thought of using pasta sauce in their meals 10.6% of the time. There are so many different meals you can make using pasta sauce besides spaghetti! Ragu offers a large variety of recipes on their website including family friendly recipes that can be prepared for less than $2 per serving. During our visit to Unilever we were served several different dishes made from recipes developed by the Ragu chefs and all of them were delicious.

One thing I can say after visiting Unilever and meeting several of the great folks behind the Ragu brand, is that these people really care about the quality of their products. They are all people just like you and I who only want to feed their family the best. They also realize what a challenge it can be to ensure our children are eating a variety of healthy foods and they are trying to make it easier for busy parents by providing a nutritious and budget friendly product.
