My Goals for 2013

Every year around this time I start thinking about what I would like to accomplish in the new year. Not that I have a bad life, but I always hope that the new year will be better than the year before. 2012 was a rough year for me in many ways. My mental health was up and down, my son had a terrible teacher for much of the year (which was rough on the whole family) and we welcomed a family member into our home only to get smacked in the face for it. To say that 2012 was a rollercoaster year would be a fair statement.

2013 is going to be better! It just has to be. I have set some goals for myself that I know will make 2013 a much better and healthier year for me and my family.

2013 Goals

1) Become more independent. This is difficult for me because my anxiety forces me to rely on my husband so much. My lack of independence can really put a strain on our relationship.

2) Focus on the positive and let go of any guilt. I am a bit of a pessimist so this is something I have to actively work on. I let the negative things in my life control my mood way too much. I also blame myself for things that I can’t change. Things from year’s past that are weighing me down. I just need to let it go.

3) Get more exercise. I am about 15 pounds from my goal weight and I really don’t get enough exercise. In the new year I’d like to start walking in the neighborhood so that I can get in better shape. I think exercising will help me both physically and emotionally. It’s a win-win.

4) Eat healthier and cook at home more. This is something that is also difficult for me because I am such a picky eater. I also enjoy eating out much to my husband’s chagrin. My goal is to cook at home at least 6 nights a week and to incorporate more veggies into our meals.

5) Spend more quality time with my sons. I am guilty of not spending as much time with my boys as I really should. They are at that age where they want to do their own thing which is great, but I need to get more involved.

6) Spend less and save more. I like to spend money and I have a terrible time saving. My husband is a pennypincher so we often argue about this. My goal is to save more this year and try to only buy the necessities.

So those are my goals for 2013 and I am going to work hard to meet them. Do you make New Year’s resolutions or goals? Care to share?

  1. Love your list! I think you’ll find that the more you cook, the more you think about what goes into your meal. And you’ll begin to want to make things from scratch if you start looking at labels, too. That’s what happened to me!

The toughest resolution – but by far the most rewarding and influential – will be your ability to let go of guilt and negativity. I look at where I am today compared to a year ago, and it’s like a whole new person, just because of having a more positive outlook. I allow myself to make mistakes and forget them.

I wish I knew a way to magically make this happen for you too, but the only thing I can do is send good vibes your way. Good luck, and awesome post.

  2. Find a walking partner!! I did at the end of last year – we walk 4-5 miles several days a week. We have done one 5k and are registered for another. It’ll help with becoming more independent and being more positive, too!

  3. I am with you on your first 3 goals! I have anxiety too and I guess sometimes I get so used to it, that I don’t even question what it would be like to get over it. :/ And I think the negativity we feel is directly related to our anxiety. It’s like a vicious cycle, you know? I hope that 2013 is a better year for you. New year, new beginnings!

  4. I make some… like you walking more is pretty standard every year.

I have had to make some new ones this year though, and it is mostly due to the internet (of all things)

    1. I am cutting down on those I blindly follow in many different ways (facebook/gfc/email ets for entries. Over the past few years I have figured out who to give my time and my tweets to.
    2. My tweets and social media skills are valuable – I am not giving them or promoting people who do not have integrity, I will no longer support or advertise for them freely.
    3. For those I do follow and want to interact with, by cutting down it will give me more time to do so (I like to interact and but not having 10000 emails it will give me time)
    3. By having more ‘quality’ over quanity it will free up more time to enjoy things at home. I may not ‘win’ as much but I wont be entering 24 hours a day.

I am pretty good at other things I just need to get a handle on being online which – sitting in front of a computer!

I wish you and yours a wonderful New Year !
